Lucan Community

Lucan Educate Together N.S. is part of the wider community of Lucan. The school community recognises the key role that Sport can play in forming links with other local schools and clubs in Lucan. Over the past number of years, the school has established close links with Lucan Sarsfields, our local GAA club. Many of our Parents and pupils are involved in the club outside of school. The school has benefitted from the skills and expertise of club coaches in football, camogie and hurling. This school year 2016/2017 our first and second class children have had six weeks of Gaelic football, facilitated by the Lucan Sarsfields club. Children focussed on the skills of passing, throwing and kicking and worked together towards participating in mini games of football.

The children have also taken part in a number of inter school blitz’s organised by the club and have thoroughly enjoyed the engagement with other local schools. Our senior classes participated in Cumann na mBunscoil leagues in football, hurling and camogie. Teams had the opportunity to compete with other schools and one of the highlights of our year was the schools trip to Croke Park for the hurling finals during Active Week!

The school also competed very successfully in the Dublin Primary School Sports at Santry which is organised by Cumann na mBunscoil.

South Dublin County Council

The school has engaged closely with South Dublin Council in its efforts to support and enhance physical activity provision in the school and encourage healthy lifestyle changes for our school community. SDCC has provided the school with funding and coaches to facilitate this process. Our Zumba and Boxercise programme this year were new sport opportunities for children which resulted from this Partnership. The Cross Country series of runs over the winter months was organised by SDCC. These have been held at Griffeen Valley park, within walking distance of the school, and have provided a huge incentive to our students to increase their fitness levels. The school also participated at the Cross Country finals in Corkagh park on May 17th.

The school has been active in promoting Walk/ Cycle/Scoot to School throughout the year. SDCC has supported this initiative through the provision of high vis- vests and arm bands for children’s safety and also in the provision of incentives/rewards for children.

Soccer

Karen /Edel have run a very successful afterschool soccer club for the children. As part of the programme the children took part in an inter schools blitz organised by the F.A.I. Our senior classes also had the opportunity to take part in workshops ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ facilitated by coaches from the FAI. Again, these initiatives were very enjoyable for the children and it was very rewarding to see children in the school, whose favourite sport is soccer, having the opportunity to display their skills and talents.

Our board of management continue to make the school facilities available for afterschool activities for children/adults .Many of these activities support the development of adults/children’s physical fitness. School staff also organise Summer Camps over the summer months where there is a strong focus on physical activity for children.

Health and Wellbeing

The school endeavours to support children in making good choices in relation to all aspects of their health. This is achieved through the teaching of SPHE. Where possible, the school is supported by HSE and other agencies committed to children’s health and well being. This year, all classes had the opportunity of participating in the Food Dudes programmes, funded by the Dept. of Health and Education. Classes 2nd/4th/6th had a visit from the HSE dental nurse who spoke to the children about the importance of dental hygiene.
